The Biologist

Character and Costume design for Alexandria Neonakis's course on schoolism. The assignment was to come up with a character to design for an existing IP. I chose to design the Biologist from Jeff Vandermeer's novel Annihilation. The Biologist is a tough, introspective woman who has joined the Area X expedition team in the hopes of finding some inner clarity and to learn more about her late husband since he was also in a previous expedition inside Area X. She goes through A LOT and by the end learns some truths about her husband that she wasn't expecting. (Spoiler alert: He may still be alive!) She also accidentally becomes exposed to some of the mysterious spores that infect Area X and it begins to transform her into something new. For this design, I wanted to show that she has retained some of her humanity in her new form as she continues on her journey to hopefully be reunited with her long lost husband. I genuinely really love the writing for this character so I wanted to do her justice!
